Queensland now classes the hours worked after 6 pm on Christmas Eve a public holiday.
Dubbed a ‘part-day public holiday’, business owners should be aware that the changes apply to employees working the six hours between 6 pm and midnight and take effect this Christmas Eve (2019).
The Queensland government amended the Holidays Act 1983 on November 27 following 71% of 1800 submissions supporting the change, with similar changes occurring in South Australia and Northern Territory.
“Many Queenslanders … have to work Christmas Eve and the change would ensure proper compensation for them,” Queensland Premier and Minister for Trade Annastacia Palaszczuk said.
Employers will need to be aware of the employee rates during the six-hour window on Christmas Eve and consider the best possible solution for business.
